Decrease Fleet Fuel Use

Save on Rising Fuel Costs with Networkfleet®

Fuel is a significant expense for large and small fleets. Networkfleet will help identify specific ways to decrease fleet fuel use by leveraging our robust suite of reports. The following customers yielded impressive fuel savings with Networkfleet:

  • Through better dispatching, Eastern Municipal Water District can dispatch the vehicle closest to a work site which lowered the average number of miles driven per vehicle, resulting in a $79,000 reduction in fuel costs within the first 6 months of using Networkfleet.
  • By eliminating unauthorized vehicle usage and unnecessary idling time, BLS Trucking saved $188,539 in fleet fuel use the first year. This was nearly a 10% savings over the previous year.
  • ServiceMaster increased miles per gallon (MPG) from 10 to 12 MPG, a fuel savings of $5,200 per year (assuming average cost of fuel is $2 per gallon).
  • Affiliated Transportation decreased fuel use 8% by reducing idle time during stopovers.

Monitoring and improving drivers’ habits such as speed and idle time, reducing miles driven by dispatching the closest vehicle, and decreasing personal use of company vehicles by monitoring off-hours or out-of-bounds usage can significantly help you decrease fleet fuel use and save money.

1.    Reduce your idle time! - Don’t wait for your son to finish soccer practice while sitting in your car, listening to the radio.  Here’s a pretty easy general rule of thumb to remember: if your car’s running and you’re not moving, your gas mileage has dropped to zero mpg. It takes about ten seconds worth of idling to use as much gasoline as it would to restart your car; this means if you’re going to be sitting anywhere for even a minute or two, it’s best to shut the car off and save gasoline.
2.    Lay off the juice! Heavy footed driving makes the car’s engine work much harder than necessary, and in order to get the required energy to quickly get up to speed, it’s going to need to burn more gasoline.  Don’t accelerate too slowly though, as this will reduce your gas mileage as well. Drive smooth and steady for best results.
3.    Slow down! According to FuelEconomy.gov <http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.shtml> , driving over the speed limit at highway speeds will reduce your vehicle’s gas mileage by between 7% and 23%.
4.    Check your Pressure! Making sure you have the correct tire pressure is important for safety reasons but it will also help you reduce unneeded gas drain. Under inflated tires will essentially reduce your car’s gas mileage by two to three percent. May not sound like a lot but can add up.

Start with following these 4 easy steps and you will be well on your way to reducing your fuel consumption and thus will save on gas!
